    2018 Challenger R/T track testing

We picked up an '18 back in April and I took it to the track a couple of weeks ago. I was limited on time and after the 1st pass which spun bad I eased into it on the 2nd pass to get a baseline with a 1.93 60ft 13.15@103.6. 100% stock on 87 octane. Race weight was 4250 and DA was 25.

Figure the car would go 12's so decided to do some testing yesterday. I have 2 M/T drag radial set ups both on Bravado Tributes. Runs were made at US 131 in Michigan on 11/3/18

    1st is 275/40/20, 29" tall on a 9.5" wheel weigh 61# each
    2nd are 275/45/18 27.8" tall on a 10" wheel weigh 58# each

I was surprised with only 3# difference

I put in 93 octane and also planned to run with and without the stock air filter. Race weight was 4260 and DA was between -220 and -360 so a little better air

Started off with the 20's and 1st pass goal was made running 1.87 60ft 12.97@105.12 followed up with a 1.88 60ft 13.00@104.80. Put on the 18's and went 1.87 60ft 12.93@105.98. Pulled the air filter and ran 1.86 60ft 12.91@105.83. Final run went back to the 20's no air filter and went 1.87 60ft 12.97@104.92

First and last pass were both 12.97 on the 20's one with and one without the air filter which tells me on a 5.7 there is no restriction with it. I heard a tenth but from my testing there wasn't anything there

The 18's being just over 1" shorter did make a difference. Best to best was .06 better over the 20's

There were a couple more passes which I did my burnout and had to wait to get a car off the track which resulted in some tire spin with a 1.91 and 1.92 60ft so neither were worth posting. I also do not like that these cars don't have trac lok in them. Had to do some dry hops to make sure the water was off the tires being one tire may only spin in the burnout box. Some of my dry burnout the car spun pretty bad so it was necessary to make sure it would hook off the line. My '17 Daytona does not have this issue

    My conclusions:
    * 93 octane picked about 2mph. (being I only had 1 run the last time it may be less but that is all I have to go by)
    18's 1" shorter are faster by .04 -.06
stock air filter is not a restriction

Before taking the car to the track I could not find much info on what this car would run. Lots of Scat Pack info but little on R/T's. We had a '13 Charger R/T and at 4450 race weight went 13.51@102 so I figured with the 8 speed and 200# less it should go low 13's at least

Hope this info will help others

Def faster then my 12 when I brought it home. June 2012 ran 13.96 bone stock. Good post, tire gains seem similar to mine when I was trying 18-20 inch wheels and drag radials. Nice to see a 5.7 out playing around. I went to the track today I was one of two rts. Rest were hellcats and track hawks. I clicked a pb of 12.21@110 today. Keep chipping away at it.

This is great info - thanks! I'm looking at various options to replace my 300 in a couple months, and a '19 R/T Challenger is one of them. I had no idea the newer 5.7's were that stout and have been looking primarily at 6.4 T/A's and Scats. Yours is the second 5.7/A8 that has reported very low 13's or better, but finding a larger pool of results is difficult for the 5.7 cars.

If these times are typical of the 17-19 5.7/A8 cars, the R/T will move up on my list of likely candidates. That kind of performance, at that price/insurance bracket, is enticing.

Typical I would not say at all. He's probably has posted some of the fastest times out there for a 5.7L. Good DA, track prep and someone who knows what he is doing are the likely reasons. Could even be a hotter than normal 5.7 too. Just for reference C&D did side by side reviews of the SP and R/T when the refresh came out. 12.4@115 vs 13.7@105. His times would make you think there isn't as much difference but there is. That's not knocking the R/T, but one shouldn't think they would be capable of doing the same. Plenty of SP owners who can barely get into the 12's. Same story for the R/T pulling low 13s.

I will agree that some 5.7's are hotter than others. The one ib my 2016 RAM is super hot for some reason.

I thought the 5.7 would do better with the new 8 speed? When i first bought my 09 R/T it 13.3@105 then when we were able to up the shift points to 6200 it did 13.1@107
