    Radar Detectors - Best/Worst? what to look for?

    So, on the 4th of July a friend and I were going to get a round a golf in and I was on a nice road with hardly any traffic. I zipped around a car and gave it the gas. By the time I pulled back into my lane I was going 100mph and decided (foolishly) to give it a little more as there was no one around...or so I thought. I got to 120 mph and let off the gas and was coasting when I saw a car up ahead. I could barely tell, but it looked like a Charger. I started thinking 'uh-oh' and started hitting the brakes. Then I could just barely see the color...Michigan State Police blue, and then I could see his light on top of the car and now I'm really hitting the brakes, lol. As I got closer I could tell he was slowing down to turn around to pull me over. Knowing I was caught I pulled over and got my papers ready. He got me on "forward moving radar" whatever that is at 112 mph in a 55 mph zone. I told him I had only had the car about a month, a 2008 Chrysler 300c, 5.7L AWD, and as my previous vehicle was a 2002 GMC Sierra Z71 4WD (I never had it over 90) I wasn't used to the difference in acceleration between the two vehicles and was going much faster than I anticipated when passing a car. He was pretty cool about it as these things go.

    I have been looking at radar detectors but there is such a wide variety from when I had one around 20 years ago. What are some things to look for when I go to order one? I'm not worried about cost so much as I want something that works good. And which radar detectors should I not buy?

    Just for the record, I'm not some reckless speed demon. But, I drive a lot, and I always have. I currently drive 45 miles each way to work, and I mostly do the speed limit but on occasion I do like to play.

    I've had two escort iX series radar detectors, an assortment of cobra/valentine/etc others, and now all I have are the escort iX series. As far as my experience goes, the cobra was garbage, and the valentine was nicknamed the 'cvs/walgreens detector' because that's all it was good for.

    In your ticket situation, doubtful any detector would have saved you unless the trooper was a rookie leaving his radar on all the time. POP detection would have helped, if there were cars ahead of you on the road with you which sounds like there weren't. So just keep that in mind.

    I'll give a vote for the Escort line. The V1s had real issues with K band as stated, but they supposedly release a junk filtering update to fix. That said a lot of people love them.

    Just compare the features and see which one has stuff that appeals to you.

    V1 here. I need to get it updated so I can put it back in the car. It's paid for itself more times than I can count. Dad has an escort and he seems to like it.

    My vote for the Valentine V1 also. I bought my first one in 1998 and it paid for itself in a month. I just sent it in for a full upgrade when I got the Challenger and it's paid for itself again. I like the bogey counter that identifies multiple sources, and the rear facing antenna also. The detector may go off and you see a trooper passing you in the opposite direction, but there is also one parked on your side of the road just ahead. Or you see one coming toward you but there's also one coming from behind. The V1 tracks all sources and what direction they are coming from and which signal is strongest.I also like the remote display so the cop can't see it in your windshield at night.That said, if you are all alone on the road and the cop is using instant-on or laser, there's no detector that will help you. It only works when the detector can pick up the signals of the cop tagging traffic in front of you.

    If you want the best, this guy is pretty good of doing field tests to show you what would work best for you. If you use a Laser Jammer as well with a detector you should be pretty good. Take a look at this guys videos it will answer any questions you might have, and tell you what is the best thing to do that would fit into your budget.     I use the Escort Redline because:

    I drive over 50k miles a year.....

    Usually at a high rate of fuel consumption...

    It reads front AND REAR

    It really stretches out in front - around curves - over hills - almost a mile out front

    Rear is a lot shorter length, but its better than nothing if a trooper is hiding ontop of an overpass

    Its not overloaded with gee gaws that limit its reach out front.

    Escort will confirm that Redline is the best for distance by far.

    I usually travel at night to avoid morons, but that makes you the only car out there for a trooper that's bored to fixate on...

    It catches laser pretty quick, but never quick enough and I've been very lucky when I run into it that there are other vehicles out there that catch enough of the beam to raise doubt that its me...thank goodness

    Vortex Radar is a good source of product information.

    I run the Uniden R3 for radar and AL Priority front & rear for LIDAR. Its hard to beat this combo.
