    exhaust/cat/header question

06 srt 300 previous owner went long tube headers and deleted the cats all together. it has a p0058 code which is the downstream 02 sensor issue. so........to pass inspection it needs the CEL off, cats and the sensors reinstalled.

best aftermarket cats for this thing?

I'd lay odds the PO had them tuned out. The code you have is for a bad heater circuit. Might be time to replace it.

I've had JBA high flow cats/mids on one of mine LX's for about 10 years now and never had any problems with the smog police. They obviously won't work with the long tubes though. Where you live, do they do physical, visual checks of the exhaust system? If they do, for sure you'll have to go back to the stock SRT stuff, but can still use aftermarket cats......as long as they're an approved type. I have long tubes and high flow cats. on my Jeep and don't have a problem with it either, but where I live they don't (not yet anyway) do visuals so it passes easily.

I agree with punisher69, they probably tuned the sensors out but left the heaters on. They'd still be working (if they're good), just not reporting the codes. The problem with long tubes is that the downstream O2's have to be moved too far back and they generally won't report the cat. effectiveness properly. You'd need something like and HP Tuner to check the actual status and, if necessary, replace the sensor(s) and turn the sensor portion back on. With the HP Tuner, you can turn on and off many of the various DTC's. Just don't get caught by the smog police.

thanks for the replies guys. great info. This thing has to pass a vehicle inspection (insurance re-builder) and it has to look like it has cats. ill get to looking and see whats going on with it.

    Sorry to jack thread.

if you tune out the 02 sensors, will an emissions machine still be able to read an errors thrown by the sensors or does its look at whatever parameters the PCM is seeing?

IMO, you're not jacking the thread. I'd say it depends on what type of machine the smog cops are using. Where I live they just hook up to the OBDII port and make sure all the Emissions Readiness Monitors (ERM) are good to go. Any codes or ERM's that don't show "ready" will fail. They also DON'T do visual inspections yet here.......and I hope they never do, because long tubes are sooooo different looking than the stock setups. I am sure my grandkids would know the difference by just looking at it.

On the other side of this, if the smog cops stick a sniffer in your tail pipe, they can read whether the O2's are doing their job and are within tolerance, even though it's not setting codes. All they do when they "tune the O2's out is shut off the codes for the O2's, so it's like everything is cool when it may not be......no codes.....no problems. Totally illegal though, if you play by the book. In the OP's case, it's possible they just shut the codes off for all the "read" portions of the sensors and left the O2 heater codes on, which could account for his heater code, but no read errors. If the heaters aren't working, there is no way the sensors can properly read the oxygen levels unless they're completely heated up......I think it's up to a little over 700*F before they'll start sampling properly. Until they're completely heated up, the vehicle would run like crap and probably set a bunch of other codes.

Hi Chris we offer some replacement catalytic converters that would fit your car and are much more affordable than buying new OE units. We didn't see your location listed, but if you live in a state with federal emissions, you can use one of the part numbers below. We currently offer universal fit units, which are just the cat and require weld-in installation by a local shop, or direct-fit models that bolt right in and include the full section of tubing. In the instance you live in California, NY or Maine, please visit our website's application look-up guide for the correct models. If you have any questions that we can answer about replacing your catalytic converter, don't hesitate to PM or call us at 1-800-990-0905!

Will any of those work with his long tube headers? I think he's trying to get cats. that'll work with his long tubes, otherwise he'll have to go back to a completely stock header back setup or some sort of a shorty header system that can still use the stock type mids and cats. He may also be able to use your "weld in" cats. too, depending on the header arrangement.

Thanks for your input on this and, by the way, I love the my custom 3 in. cat. back with your 14589 Magnaflow muffler. It's been on my 06 Hemi Jeep for about 9 years now and still love the sound. The long tube headers I have on it have the cats. included before the muffler and work fine.
